Streaming Movies, February 1, 2010
I purchased the BD-P1600 a few weeks ago. I was surprised to learn that it would only connect to the Internet for streaming movies and BD-LIVE by using Samsung's USB Wireless adapter, so I bought one. Now, I feel that this player does a fine job of playing both Blu-ray and regular DVD's. It also does an impressive job of connecting to my secure wireless network (it liked WEP router security much better than WPA Personal). Even though the wireless adapter is inside a wooden TV cabinet with other electronics, it still connects to my wireless network almost instantly.

So, even though it is a bit noisy, when first starting a DVD, and even though the people at Samsung were virtually worthless at helping me get it to talk to my wireless network, initially, I would recomment this player.

Instructions for fixing lockup, February 1, 2010
Like some other posters, my unit locked up after upgrading firmware. I called tech support and was able to resolve the issues without another firmware upgrade! In hopes this is helpful to anyone else with this issue, I am posting instructions here:

  • Start with the drive bay empty
  • Turn the power off
  • Unplug the system
  • Press and hold the power button for 20+ seconds (When I started, it beeped even with the unit unplugged...)
  • Leave the unit unplugged for at least 2 minutes.
When you restart, you may need to reset your IP address by clicking on the wireless connection and entering your Wireless password again. If this doesn't work, then you still need to apply the firmware update, but there is a good chance it will work and you can save yourself some trouble. If you can't get the dvd out of the drive bay, then power off and power back on and hit the eject button. There is also a code for your remote (6982? Sorry, I don't remember.) that you can get from tech support to eject the disk, but this wasn't necessary for me. Kudos to the Samsung after-market team from taking this product from failure to passable.

Finally a FAST stand alone, March 23, 2009
I bought one of these to replace a PS3 because I hated that it looked like a wart in my setup, had a loud fan, and could not bitstream. Finally there is a small blu-ray standalone that is fast, has a great picture and can bitstream advanced audio. It looks great in the rack and the netflix/pandora features are a nice bonus. I won't be missing the PS3 at all.

BTW, it is known that a 1GB usb drive is needed for BD live enabled titles. If you do not have one installed, and are not internet connected BD-live titles will not play unless BD-Live is disabled under the settings. I don't know why it is enabled by default, but the couple of guys that had unplayable discs could have fixed that problem my disabling BD-Live or inserting a 1GB flash drive. A little research will yield a lot.

Since the player is brand new (almost pre-release) there may be hiccups, but expect firmware to address them as they are found. As is, the player is playing all my blu-rays spectacularly. This is a great player. Don't hesitate if the features meet your needs.

Good value player, March 17, 2009
This is a good value for a blu-ray player with the new online features available such as Netflix, Pandora, and BD-Live. It is small and easy to install and setup. I use the HDMI output to my Samsung HDTV and the Optical Digital Audio output to my AV receiver. The Anynet+ feature is convenient which helps the Samsung components work together reducing button pushing. I hooked up an ethernet cable and easily got it online and setup with my pre-existing accounts with Netflix and Pandora. I've read BD-Live requires a USB 1GB flash drive. I have download cable modem speeds in 6MB/s range so the picture quality is very good from Netflix, I'd say equivalent to upconverted DVD quality. Audio quality from Pandora is also excellent and the commercial-free music service is supreme. Blu-ray DVDs look fantastic and upconverted standard DVDs look great too. This does not have the higher-end HQV chip to my knowledge. The face pushbutton interface is cool and has a high-tech feel to it. Load time is very fast - about 8 to 10s. The menus look good and are easy to navigate. No complaints here. I'm very pleased getting all these features for entry level money.

Jumping the gun abit, the player is VERY nice, March 14, 2009
The BD-P1600 is BRAND SPANKING NEW to the market and it's msrp is $299,and it has alot of new features last year's equivalent model(bd-p1500)doesn't have.It WILL eventually go down in price, but why don't you give the competition a month or two to get their new models out before you start crying about the price being too high. It's a fact that Best Buy has had the Samsung BD-P1600 AND the new higher end model BD-P3600($399)on their shelves for the past two weeks consistantly and have been selling out every batch they get at the full price, so it doesn't loOk like the prices they are asking for is out of the question for the early adopters/techies that both have the cash and are willing to pay the asking price to have the latest and rgeatest tech toys.If someone wants to wait for the prices to come down that's all well and good, but just as well to those that would like the new players now and are willing to pay a little extra for the luxury.

The BD-P1600 is ALOT smaller than last year's models,VERY fast load times, picture is EXCELLENTt,AND it has Netflix and Pandora video/music streaming. Those are just a few things about the new
BR player. My neighbor picked one up and asked me over to help him tweak it and set it up in his HT.Those looking for full 7.1 analog outputs might want to pick up the 1600's bigger brother however(BD-P3600/$399).
